专题10 阅读回答问题

When I was little, I used to be afraid of the dark. I always thought that there was a ghost in my closet(壁橱). Houses often made strange noises at night. Sometimes I could feel eyes watching me and I was afraid to move. I thought that if I didn’t move, “they” wouldn’t get me. Usually when this happened, I wanted to go to the bathroom. So before going there I would be huddling(缩作一团) under my quilt, trying to build up the courage for scary night-time trip to the bathroom.

My fear of the dark left me when I was in my early teens. I had a dream. In my dream, I saw this ghost. He was right in front of me. I somehow found the courage. I was so angry with him that I beat him. This dream was so exciting that I can still remember it. After this dream, my fear of the dark was gone. I’m not afraid of the dark or anything else anymore.

Has anyone else had a dream like this that helped him or her?

You may have heard of Robin Li. After all, Robin Li is considered as “the man who competed against Google and won”, thanks to his creation of Baidu, China’s largest search engine in China.

Born in 1968, Li was the 4th of 5 children born to factory workers in Yangquan of Shanxi Province in China. Back then, Yangquan was an underdeveloped city that did not offer much to its people. Like most of the kids in the neighborhood, Li spent his childhood in hardships.

His mother, however, encouraged him to stay hopeful for a better tomorrow. He grew up remembering his mother’s words, “If you want a better life in the future, you will have to study hard and make sure you get into the best college.”

Li never forgot his mother’s words and studied hard. He cleared the entrance of Peking University and completed Bachelor of Science Degree in library information management. He later completed a postgraduate (研究生) course for computer science with a Master’s Degree at the University of Buffalo, the State University of New York.

In 1999, Li and his wife Melissa went for an activity at Stanford University. After that Melissa asked her husband that she would like to see him as a founder (创始人) of an Internet company. Bearing a dream of changing people’s life with science and technology and encouraged by Melissa, Robin Li returned to China and founded Baidu at the end of 1999. After years of efforts, Baidu has become the most popular Chinese website in China, the largest Chinese search engine and the largest Chinese website.

Therefore, it is truly said that behind every successful man there stands a woman. For Robin, there stand two behind him.

(2022春·湖南长沙·九年级长沙市南雅中学校联考期中)阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

During the Jin Dynasty(265—420), there was a child named Che Yin. He was intelligent and loved reading. He grew up in a poor family and couldn’t afford lamp oil to study at night.

One night, he saw fireflies(萤火虫)outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung the bag up as a lamp. It was said that he spent all of his summer nights reading like this.

Another child named Sun Kang who lived during the same period also loved reading. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil and couldn’t study at night. When he suddenly woke up at midnight, he saw the snow reflecting the moonlight outside his house. His first thought was “Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” He took out his books and read, even though he was freezing cold.

Both of the two kids later became successful government officials. People were touched by their hardworking spirit and their stories inspired the Chinese idiom “nangying yingxue(囊萤映雪)”, or “to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the reflected light of snow”.
