Will Liu, a singer and actor from Taiwan, has taken the internet by storm in an unexpected way—being a livestreaming(直播) personal trainer on Douyin.

His workout routines(健身操) are so popular that they have broken Douyin’s livestreaming record for 2022 so far, according to the data analysis platform(数据分析平台)Chanmama. Within a month, Liu’s livestreams had been viewed about 100 million times, with his most popular session attracting over 44 million viewers.

The 49-year-old often exercises with his wife and mother-in-law. They dance to upbeat(欢快的)songs while explaining and breaking down their moves. One of Liu’s most-watched routines is set to A Herbalist’s Manual(《本草纲目》)by pop singer Jay Chou. “I want to slap my leg whenever I hear A Herbalist’s Manual now,” shared an internet user.

Liu has “sparked a fitness wave(引发健身潮流)”, noted the ECNS website. Especially when millions of people are in lockdown because of COVID-19, Liu’s routines are timely and helpful. Liu has also been in lockdown with his family in Shanghai.

Ever since Liu’s videos went viral (走红), people across the country have been practicing the workout routines at home, schools, quarantine centers(集中隔离点)and even while lining up for nucleic acid tests(核酸检测).

Liu isn’t the only person to get popular from the fitness wave. According to Douyin, followers of fitness videos were up by 208 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. This shows the rise of the online fitness business and fitness influencers(网红)since the pandemic started, wrote ECNS.

Live streaming(直播) has become very popular in China. Viewers can communicate with hosts by messaging them, buying them gifts, or sending them tips. However, some children are spending too much money on live stream platforms. In 2020, a 17-year-old boy in Jingmen, Hubei province, sent tips that added up to 150, 000 yuan to a host. That sum of money was his parents’ savings.

To prevent things like this from happening again, the National Radio and Television Administration introduced a new rule on Nov. 23, 2020 to better manage live streaming services. The rule bans ( 禁止) children from tipping (打赏) or sending gifts to live stream hosts and performers. It also requires people to register (注册) on live streaming sites with their real names.

“Online shows and live streaming have become so popular. I always feel worried that my son might become addicted(上瘾) to them or do something that may affect his growth,” said Wang Haifeng, a mother of a 15-year-old boy in Beijing, “Stricter management makes me feel safer.”

In addition to the rules, there are some other rules that will be put into use to help manage live streaming services. For example, live streaming platforms will be required to put a limit on how much money people can send to live streamers. Once the limit is reached, underage viewers will not be able to send gifts or tip.

Other rules include stopping live streaming platforms from encouraging viewers to send gifts or tips. Any host who is found doing this will be added to a blacklist.
