专题07 垃圾分类

一、阅读单选

Doing a research before you sort your waste can make a difference. Here are a few ways to help you do it better.

Plastic bottles and their caps

They melt(熔化)at different temperatures. In recycling factories, workers deal with caps and bottles differently. You may squeeze(挤压)the air out of the bottles before you recycle them.

Plastic bags

They cause a lot of trouble in the recycling process. If you have a lot of them, you can turn to programs that mainly deal with them. Or you may just put them in the dry garbage bin.

Pizza boxes

They aren’t recyclable because there is oil on them. It isn’t just pizza boxes. Many food boxes are the same as the pizza boxes. Paper napkins(餐巾), plates and towels are non-recyclable for this reason.

Wet Waste

It’s also known as “kitchen waste”. You don’t want the things, but some animals can eat them. You don’t need to recycle them. Instead, use them to feed animals.

As you know, Shanghai was the first city to sort(分 类) their garbage. On May 15th, 2020, Beijing also became one of the members.

In the past, people put a lot of garbage together and then took the garbage to landfill sites(填埋场). But the landfill sites could pollute(污染) the land and the water.

The new plan asks people to put their garbage into four different boxes, one for each kind of garbage. The brown box is for “wet garbage” (such as food and drink waste). The red one is for harmful waste (such as batteries and electronics). The blue one is for recyclable things (such as paper and plastic). And finally, the black one is for “dry garbage” (everything else). This “sort your garbage plan” is the same as other plans used by cities around the world.

Why should we sort our garbage? The reason is that we are producing lots of waste every year. It’s reported that Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year. Sorting the garbage can be good for our earth.

But it is still a long way to go as it takes time for people to learn and develop the habit of sorting garbage. More cities are on their way. By 2025, most Chinese cities may finish the building of garbage sorting.

6.How do the people in Beijing and Shanghai deal with the garbage now?
