In about five months, China returned rock and soil samples(样本)to the earth from the moon and landed a robot on Mars—both very difficult tasks. The world couldn’t help but want to know: What are those great Chinese scientists and engineers going to do next?

On Thursday, June 17, 2021, they had the answer. At 9:22 a.m., a Chinese rocket carrying three astronauts(宇航员)in the Shenzhou 12 spaceship took off at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre. The three astronauts—Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming, and Tang Hongbo—set out on the journey to Tiangong space station. They planned to spend about three months on the space station.

The largest space station in human history, the International Space Station, is now a 24-year-old one by 2022. It has housed over 200 astronauts from 19 different countries—but not China. This time, our astronauts reached Tiangong space station, a space station of our own.

“We need to build our own new home in space and test a number of new technologies. So, the task is a little difficult but very important. But I believe with the three of us working closely together—we can do it well,” Nie Haisheng said.

“We are like the sea of flowers in May, ” Do you know the song of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC)?

In 1987, a notice in China Youth Daily read, “We warmly welcome contributors (投稿人) to write a song for the CYLC.” When 34-year-old Hu Hongwei saw this, he got excited.

One day, an oil painting flashed into his mind: In front of Tiananmen Square, colorful flowers bloom in May. How exciting! He felt that the May Fourth Movement was as lively as young people. So he thought youth were like a sea of flowers in May.

Later, the composer (作曲家) Lei Yusheng saw the lyrics and decided to compose the song. Lei wanted to show a change in China’s history through the song. He lowered the key in the middle of the song and slowly pushed the music to a climax (高潮).

In October 1987, China Youth Daily chose 10 songs out of 5,300. Among them, Hu and Lei’s work topped the list. At the 12th National Congress of CYLC held in May 1988, it was made the temporary (暂时的) song of the organization. It was then made the official song in 2003.

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates(蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles(圆圈) and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts. One is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast.

The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rain are.
