As China’s fastest man, Su Bingtian made history in the summer of 2021. Su set a new record of 9.83 seconds at the Tokyo Olympics Men’s 100m semifinals (半决赛), which made him the first Chinese runner to enter the event’s final round. For a long time, some people thought that Asian people were not good at sprinting, Su’s success shows it’s not true.


Janis Chan as a Hong Kong host, in 2021, hosted No Poverty Land (《无穷之路》) to show how people in poor areas of China work hard to shake off poverty. Chan walked across mountains and rivers. Gao Yan is a mother from Shanghai. She takes her young daughter, a first grader, to work this week. Her daughter sits at a desk next to her and uses a computer to have online classes.

With COVID-19 outbreaks(新冠爆发), many places put classes for primary and middle school students online and limits the movement(限制行动) to make sure the safety(安全) of students and teachers.

Because of COVID-19, Shanghai’ s education authority(教育权威) says that all primary and middle school students would start online classes the next day. As Gao and her husband both have to work and there is no one to take care of her daughter, she has to take her daughter to work.

“My workmates are very helpful, and my daughter finds online classes very interesting because it is the first time she has these online classes,” Gao said.

For each 40-minute course, her daughter can have live talks with teachers and classmates, she said. “I like the online classes because no parent wants their child to be left behind with COVID-19 at school,” she said. “My only concern(担忧) is that   her eyesight might be bad from looking at the computer for too long.”

Shanghai middle school student Liu Yanming starts to take online classes at home on Monday with his father, a teacher who also takes part in other classes. Liu says he is no stranger(陌生人) to online classes as he spent a long time studying online in 2020. The teachers are also very familiar(熟悉的) with how to use classes online and because of the online classes he can also get up a bit later and does not need to wear a school uniform.

His mother, Xie Feng, says online classes are the “lesser of two evils”(两害相权取其轻). While face-to-face teaching can not be safe now, she says that without teachers’   supervision(监督) she sees her son playing games while taking online classes.
